Cedar raised bed prices compared, checked 21 September 2026.
Our prices come from the catalogue and move when our costs move. The other figures were typed by hand from the public product pages of the best-known Canadian cedar planter brand on the day named, and will drift; tell us if one is stale. Nothing here is a claim about anyone's costs.
Founding price now, launch price once the batch is gone.
Both prices come from the same cost model. The founding price is our cost plus 30percent, or the market’s price for the same size and grade where that was lower on 21 September 2026, never below our cost; the launch price is what we charge for the same size after the Founding Batch, not a struck-through number we never sold at. Canadian dollars, before tax, courier shipping anywhere in Canada included.

Every size beside the best-known Canadian cedar planter brand.
For each size we show our founding price, our launch price, that brand's sale price on the day we checked, and the regular price it listed beside its sale price. We compare against the sale price, because that is what a customer paid that day. The listed regular price is there so you can see it, not as the basis of any saving.

Checked 21 September 2026 on the public product pages of the best-known Canadian cedar planter brand; its Select grade is compared with our Clear and its Garden grade with our Knotty. A positive figure means our founding price is below its sale price that day; a negative figure means ours is higher. Its listed regular price is shown as it appeared and is not the basis of any saving. Both our prices and its prices are before tax; ours include courier shipping anywhere in Canada.
On the raised bed 18 × 48 in, deep in Clear, the raised bed 18 × 48 in, deep in Knotty, the raised bed 18 × 48 in, standard in Knotty, the raised bed 11.5 × 48 in, deep in Clear, the raised bed 11.5 × 48 in, deep in Knotty, the raised bed 11.5 × 24 in, standard in Clear, the raised bed 11.5 × 36 in, standard in Clear, the raised bed 11.5 × 36 in, standard in Knotty, the raised bed 11.5 × 48 in, standard in Clear, the raised bed 11.5 × 48 in, standard in Knotty, that brand's sale price on 21 September 2026 was below what it costs us to build and ship the bed, so our founding price there is our cost plus the card fee and no more. We show its price as it was.
Here is the table in one paragraph. On 36 of the 52 size-and-grade combinations, our founding price is below that brand's sale price on 21 September 2026; on 6 it is the same price, because where its sale price was under our cost plus 30 percent we match it; and on 10 ours is higher, because that day its sale price was below our cost and we sell nothing below cost. Our price includes courier shipping to any address in Canada and a launch price we will charge later; its price included shipping too, against a listed regular price it did not sell at that day. Where its price is lower, the table says so, and we would rather you read it here than find it later.
Which raised bed is right for food.
We sell pressure-treated lumber for fences and cedar for planters, so this table has no side to take. Where we have a source for a lifespan we quote it; where we do not, the cell says so.
| Western Red Cedar (ours) | Pressure-treated softwood | Galvanized steel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The material | Western Red Cedar from British Columbia, nominal 1x6 boards, 3/4 by 5-1/2 in actual. | Softwood (usually pine or spruce) with a copper-based preservative forced into it under pressure. | Sheet steel with a zinc coating, sometimes painted or corrugated for stiffness. |
| Treatment or coating | None. Untreated, unstained, unsealed inside the box. | ACQ or copper azole in current Canadian stock. | The zinc is the coating; paint on top of it on some products. |
| Next to food soil | Untreated wood behind a fabric liner. The decay resistance is in the wood itself. | Not permitted in contact with soil in certified organic production. Modern treatments leach copper at low levels; we sell it for fences, not for planters. | Inert while the coating is intact. Where the zinc is scratched or cut, the steel underneath rusts. |
| Expected life | 15 to 30 years above ground and 5 to 15 years in ground contact in the published durability tables (Class 2 durable). Wood holding wet soil sits toward the low end, which is what the liner, the drainage gaps and the legs are for. | Set by the treatment class and the treater's warranty. We do not quote a number we cannot source. | As long as the coating lasts; there is no published range we would stand behind. |
| Weight, empty | 30 to 71 lb across our sizes (estimates from the drawings until the first units are weighed). | About the same as cedar, heavier when the wood is wet. | The lightest to ship; a thin panel needs corrugation or a frame to hold its shape. |
| Heat in summer | Wood insulates. The soil at the wall stays close to the soil in the middle. | Same as cedar. | A metal wall in the afternoon sun warms the soil beside it; keep roots off the wall. |
| How it ages | Amber to silver grey over a year or two outside. A penetrating oil holds the colour if you prefer it. | The brown or green tint fades to grey. | Unchanged until the coating fails, then rust at the failure. |
| What we build from it | Every raised bed and planter box on this site. | Our fence panels and fencing lumber. | Nothing but the powder-coated legs under the cedar. |
What our price includes, stated flat.
A price with shipping inside it and a price with shipping added at the checkout are not the same number. Ours is the first kind. Every size page shows how much of the price the courier is, and the terms page says what happens if a date moves.
