Asked about planter boxes.
Raised garden bed or planter box: what is the difference here?
The same cedar box and the same 12 inches of soil. A planter box stands 24 inches tall, so it sits beside a seat, on a step or under a window; a raised garden bed stands 30 inches, working height for vegetables, so you tend it standing up. Boxes are 18 inches wide in six lengths from 18 to 72 inches; beds come Wide or Narrow in five lengths from 24 to 72. If the question is food, buy the bed. If it is the front step, buy the box.
What grows in a planter box?
Herbs, salad greens, annual and perennial flowers, strawberries, a dwarf tomato or a pepper, spring bulbs under any of them. Twelve inches of soil is enough for most things that are not a deep root crop, and more than a window box or a pot gives you, so the box dries out slower and feeds longer. Tall grasses or a row of small cedars in the 60 and 72 inch boxes make a screen at eye height.
Can it go on a balcony?
Yes, and the shorter lengths are made for it. It stands 24 inches tall, so it sits under a railing rather than above it. Check the filled weight on the size page against your building's rules; soil is most of the weight once it is wet, so fill it in place rather than carrying it full. The carton is flat and the longest part is the long board, so it goes up in a standard elevator.
Clear or Knotty?
Same boards, same build, same 12 inches of soil. Clear is selected for clear, even grain with no knots; Knotty carries sound, tight knots and the small checks cedar grows with, and costs less because knotty boards cost us less. Choose Clear for a front entrance you look at every day and Knotty for the patio or the back step. Both weather to the same silver grey if you leave them bare.
Does it drain?
Yes. Cedar base planks sit on cleats with drainage gaps of 3/8 to 1/2 inch between them, and a fabric liner over the planks keeps the soil in while the water leaves. Nothing pools in the box, which is what kills most container plants over a wet week. On a balcony or a deck, put a tray or a strip of gravel under it if drips matter to the floor below, because it will drip after a hard rain.
How is it shipped?
Flat in one carton with the end panels pre-fitted to their legs, by courier, shipping included anywhere in Canada. Deliveries begin January 2027. Every Founding Batch order is delivered by 28 February 2027. We email a production update every two weeks and the tracking number the week it ships. Pickup at the shop in Bolton is welcome if you are near it.
