Cedar raised garden beds in Markham, built in Bolton.
Cedar beds for Cornell and Berczy's small yards and Unionville's deep heritage lots.

What a Markham yard asks of a raised bed.
Markham has two kinds of yard. Cornell, Berczy and the newer streets east of Kennedy have small, fenced rectangles where one Wide 48 Deep bed is the garden. Unionville and the older Thornhill edge have deep lots and heritage frontages where a planter box at the door does the decorative work and the beds go behind the house.
Markham is one of the few suburbs with its own frost record: the Buttonville airport station, in the middle of the city, averages a last spring frost of 3 May and a first fall frost of 13 October in the 1991-2020 normals, 161 frost-free days, three weeks shorter than downtown Toronto. That is the argument for a Deep bed and for starting tomatoes and peppers indoors or buying them as transplants. The city is zone 6b on the 1991-2020 hardiness map, half a zone up from 6a.
Vining crops in a 12 inch bed want a trellis at the back of the box; a Wide bed placed against a fence gives the trellis something to lean on. In Cornell's lanes the bed often goes beside the garage on the laneway side, where the afternoon sun is.
