Help choosing a depth
Deep is 12 inches of soil for tomatoes, peppers, carrots, beets and most herbs. Standard is 8 inches for lettuce, spinach, radishes, strawberries and annual flowers, with fewer bags to fill and less weight on a balcony. Both stand 30 inches tall.
Help choosing a grade
Clear boards are selected for clear, even grain with no knots. Knotty boards are the same boards with sound, tight knots and the small checks cedar grows with. Same thickness, structure, legs, liner and hardware; Clear costs more because clear boards cost us more.
Help choosing a width
Wide is 18 inches, two rows of greens or one row of tomatoes with herbs in front, the usual patio or yard bed. Narrow is 11.5 inches, one row along a wall, a fence or a balcony rail, and it leaves the walkway.

What you are buying, and what grows in it.
A 5 ft elevated bed, 11.5 inches wide with 12 inches of soil: about 4.1 square feet of growing space and roughly 115 litres of soil, standing 30 inches tall on four powder-coated steel legs. Deep enough for tomatoes, peppers, carrots and beets, in one row along a wall or a rail. Cut and assembled in Bolton, Ontario, from Western Red Cedar from British Columbia; clear grade means boards selected for clear, even grain with no knots. It ships flat in one carton, about 57 lb, shipping across Canada included, and is designed to assemble in about 10 minutes with the wrench in the box.
The box is nominal 1x6 cedar (3/4 by 5-1/2 in actual), four courses high, 22 in walls, with the end boards captured between the long boards and each corner wrapped by an L-shaped steel bracket, bolted through the bracket's flanges, that runs to the ground as the leg. 10 cedar base planks sit on cleats with drainage gaps, and a fabric liner keeps the soil off the wood. Nothing is treated, stained or sealed; the cedar weathers to silver outside, or holds its colour under a penetrating oil.

- What fits: 4.1 square feet of growing space, or about 16 lettuce, 36 bush beans, 64 carrots, 4 peppers, 2 tomatoes if the whole bed went to one crop by the square-foot method.
- Filled weight: about 361 to 463 lb with moist mix, so place it before you fill it. On a balcony, check the load rating with that number.
- Footprint: the legs wrap the outside corners and take no room inside the box, so it can sit tight to a wall or a rail.

About ten minutes with the wrench in the box.
Designed for a ten-minute assembly with the wrench in the box. We will time it on the first production units and publish the number. The end panels ship with the corner brackets already bolted on, so the job is the long boards, the base planks and the liner.
- Unpack on the carton. Lay the flattened carton on the ground as a work mat and check the parts against the list: two end panels with legs, the long boards, the base planks, the liner, the hardware bag and the wrench.
- Stand the end panels. Stand both end panels on their feet about the length of a long board apart, legs toward each other.
- Fit the long boards. Offer up the bottom long board to the legs on one side, push the carriage bolts through the pre-drilled holes from the outside, and run the nuts on finger-tight from the inside. Repeat for the other side, then the course above.
- Square and tighten. Check the box is square by measuring the two diagonals; nudge until they match, then tighten every nut with the wrench. Snug, not crushing: cedar dents.
- Drop in the base planks. Lay the planks across the width on the cleats. Leave the drainage gaps as they fall.
- Lay the liner. Spread the liner over the planks and up the walls, tuck it an inch below the top edge, and staple or tack it if you want it held.
- Place and fill. Set the bed where it lives, check it is level (a paver under a low leg), then fill. The soil calculator gives the litres and the bag count for your size.
- Two end panels with the steel corner brackets already bolted on
- Two long boards per course, pre-drilled
- Cedar base planks, cut to the width
- Fabric liner
- Carriage bolts, nuts and washers, counted for the size, in one bag
- The wrench
This size ships with 10 base planks and 32 bolts, about 57 lb in one carton.
Damage, defects and changing your mind.
If the carton or the contents arrive damaged, photograph them within 48 hours and email the photographs with your order number. We replace the damaged part or the whole unit at our cost. Defects in materials or workmanship are handled the same way. Cedar's knots, checks and silvering are the material, not defects.
Warranty: 3 years from delivery on the structure and the steel legs, both grades. If a board splits through, a joint opens or a leg fails in normal garden use in that time, we replace the part or the unit at our cost. Excluded: knots, checks and the silvering cedar weathers to, which are the material, not defects; damage from a fall, a vehicle or a fire; and a bed left in standing water.
Change-of-mind returns after delivery are accepted within 30 days, unused and in the carton, with return shipping paid by the customer and the price refunded in full.
Before your order ships: cancel any time before your order ships. Full refund within 15 days.
