Fence rules in Brampton.
A backyard fence in Brampton can be up to 2.0 m (6 ft 6 in). A pool needs an enclosure at least 1.2 m high, approved by the city before the water goes in.
How tall a fence can be in Brampton.
The rules below come from Zoning By-law 270-2004, section 10.10 (fences) and section 6.15 (visibility triangle), and cover Springdale, Mount Pleasant, Heart Lake, Bramalea, Castlemore and the rest of the city.
| Where the fence is | Height limit |
|---|---|
| Back and side yards | 2.0 m (6 ft 6 in) |
| Back or side yard next to an institutional zone | 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) |
| Front yard | 1.0 m (3 ft 3 in) |
| Corner visibility triangle, 6 m along each lot line | 0.8 m (2 ft 7 in) above the street |
| Privacy screen on a deck, porch or balcony | 1.8 m above the deck |
How it’s measured. The zoning rule caps the height of the fence itself.
Posts and caps. The zoning rule makes no allowance for posts or caps, so keep the whole fence, posts included, under the limit.
Corners and driveways.
On a corner lot, nothing taller than 0.8 m above the street inside the visibility triangle, 6 m along each lot line from the corner.
Pool enclosures in Brampton.
A pool enclosure permit from the Chief Building Official comes before the pool, and the pool stays empty until the enclosure is inspected and approved.
- 1.2 m to 2.0 m high, measured on the outside.
- At least 1.2 m from the pool, or 1.8 m high where it is closer.
- Wood: vertical boards at least 1 × 4 with gaps of 5 cm or less, on 2 × 4 rails, and no rails or bracing on the outside; posts at least 4 in., 2.4 m on centre, set in concrete 1.2 m deep.
- Gates close by themselves within 30 seconds and latch themselves.
What needs a permit, and how to ask for more.
Permits. The zoning rules set heights but no permit for an ordinary fence. A pool enclosure needs a permit.
Exemptions. Fence heights are zoning, so relief from them is a minor variance at the Committee of Adjustment.
- Brampton adopted a new Zoning By-law, 14-2026, on February 4, 2026. It is under appeal at the Ontario Land Tribunal, and until the appeals are settled both by-laws apply and the stricter rule of the two governs. The limits here are the current by-law’s (270-2004); ask the City’s zoning desk whether the new one changes anything for your lot.
- The Division Fence By-law 172-2006 sets how neighbours share the cost of a fence on the line: written notice by registered mail and quotes first, and the neighbour’s share is capped at half the cost of a basic 4 ft chain link fence unless you agree otherwise.

This page covers heights, corners and driveways, pools and permits; the full by-law, linked below, covers everything else. We read each figure here from the city’s own documents and last checked them on September 26, 2026. By-laws change, and zoning, a subdivision agreement or a heritage designation can set a lower limit on your street. The city’s by-law office has the final word, so check with them before you build.
