FAQ
Common questions, plain answers.
Five categories, plain-spoken answers. If something’s missing, reach out via the contact page and we’ll add it.
Panels & materials
What makes the Good Neighbour “finished both sides”?
The shadowbox pattern alternates pickets across both faces of the centre stringer. There is no back face with exposed framing — your neighbour sees the same panel you do.
Cedar vs. pressure-treated — which should I buy?
Cedar if appearance matters, budget allows, or the fence is highly visible. Pressure-treated if you’re doing a long run, covering a rental property, or in a yard with heavy de-icing salt exposure.
Do you sell pressure-treated fence panels?
Yes — two stocked 6 ft × 8 ft styles: a solid-board Privacy panel (no gaps, a true 73.5″ tall) and a shadowbox Lattice Top finished on both sides with a diagonal crown. Both are pre-assembled in Bolton, 100% Canadian-made, and priced on their product pages.
Do pressure-treated panels need to be stained?
No — the brown colour is built into the treatment, so the fence goes up finished. If you want to stain or seal later, wait four to six weeks for the wood to dry down, then sprinkle water on a board: absorbed within ten minutes means it’s ready.
What’s the difference between the Heritage Diagonal and Square lattice?
Both share the same solid cedar base; the difference is the lattice crown. Diagonal is the classic West Coast look and comes in two grades — premium (1×6 on a 2×4 frame) and contractor (1×4 on 2×3 OT3). Square is a crisp modern grid that pairs with black-trimmed architecture.
Delivery & pickup
Do you deliver fence panels?
Yes — within roughly 100 km of Bolton, which covers Toronto, Peel, York, Halton, Durham, Hamilton and most of the surrounding GTA. Every product page and the fence calculator check your postal code before you order. Pickup at the Bolton yard is always free.
How much does delivery cost?
A flat $200 per 40 panels (or part of 40), plus HST. One fee covers a typical whole yard — a 10-panel order and a 40-panel order pay the same $200. There are no fuel surcharges or hidden extras.
Can lumber be delivered too?
Loose lumber — posts, boards, lattice strips — is pickup-only when ordering online. If your order mixes panels and lumber, the whole order becomes pickup. Need lumber delivered? Call 647-569-2163 for a quote, or order the panels separately for delivery.
When does my delivery arrive?
We confirm your delivery date by email or text right after checkout and call before the truck arrives. Timing depends on the production run — if you're working against a deadline, call 647-569-2163 before you order and we'll tell you straight.
How to buy
Can I buy a panel direct from NorthStar?
Yes. In-stock panels can be ordered and paid for online — pick your styles, pay by card, and we confirm a pickup time at our yard at 240 Ellwood Drive West, Bolton, Ontario. Custom sizes and matching gates are priced by hand through the contact page. A dealer network is being built; yards that want to carry NorthStar can apply through Polaris Pro.
Do you sell fence gates?
Not as a stocked item — today we manufacture fence panels only, and there are no gates in inventory. We occasionally build a made-to-match gate by request when production allows; if your project needs one, call 647-569-2163 before ordering panels and we’ll tell you honestly whether we can take it on and when.
How big is a panel, really?
“6 ft × 8 ft” is the nominal trade size. True dimensions vary by style — 67.5″ to 73.5″ high, all 96″ wide — and are printed on every product page. Lay out your run against the true numbers, not the trade name; the full guide is here.
Do you ship to the United States?
Eventually, yes — the nearer-term plan is to add US border-state dealers once we’re firmly established in Canada.
Installation & finishing
Do I need to stain my cedar panels?
Not for durability. Cedar weathers to silver-grey on its own without losing structural integrity. Stain is optional — apply a penetrating oil stain if you want to hold the amber tone.
What fasteners should I use on the pressure-treated panels?
Hot-dipped galvanised or stainless steel ring-shank. The copper in the treatment corrodes plain and electro-galvanised fasteners over time — hot-dipped galvanised is the accepted standard, stainless is the premium choice that outlasts everything.
Can I cut a panel to fit a short run?
Yes. The shadowbox pattern cuts cleanly from either end. Seal cut edges on pressure-treated stock with an end-cut preservative.
Polaris Pro & dealer program
Who’s Polaris Pro for?
Lumberyards, landscapers, contractors, and fence-install crews who want to stock or install NorthStar panels. We’re building the program with our first dealers — start with an application.
What are the terms?
Program terms — pricing, payment, and fulfillment logistics — get set up on a per-yard basis when you apply. We’d rather build the program honestly with our first dealers than bolt on standard terms after.
