The premium brown pressure-treated stock we build our own panels from, kiln-dried so it stays straight, with the brown colour built into the treatment. Sold by the piece: 2×4 framing, 1×6 fence boards, 4×4 and 6×6 posts, lattice and nailing strips, priced below the big box’s premium board.
What a fence board is, and how many an 8 ft section takes.
A fence board is the picket, the 1×6 that faces the yard: a true ¾ in. by 5½ in., 6 ft long for a 6 ft fence and 5 ft for a 4 or 5 ft fence or the run under a lattice top. Ours is a premium brown pressure-treated 1×6, kiln-dried and above-ground rated, with the brown colour built into the treatment, $3.79 for the 6 ft and $3.19 for the 5 ft, sold by the piece. Between posts at 96 in. on centre, a solid privacy section takes 16 to 17 boards with 3/16 in. gaps, and a shadowbox, with the boards alternating on both sides of the rails, takes about 12 a side, 24 in all.
The boards hang on 2×4 rails, two at least and three to keep a 6 ft board flat, one 8 ft rail per row per section. Every section needs a post and the run needs one more to close it: a 10 ft 4×4 for a 6 ft fence, set 48 in. down to clear frost, an 8 ft 4×4 for a 4 ft fence, and a 6×6 at gates and corners. A lattice-top run adds a lattice strip over 5 ft boards, held in its channel by 1×1 nailing strips. Everything here is pickup only at the Bolton yard, and it is the same stock we build our finished 6 ft × 8 ft panels from, which drop between the same posts if you would rather skip the board-by-board work.

Materials per section at the prices on this page, before concrete, fasteners and HST; the closing post and the 6×6s at gates and corners are extra. The shadowbox count assumes an 8 in. pitch, and the last section of most runs is short, so cut boards there.
