If you searched for metal fence panels in Ontario, most of what you found ships from British Columbia by freight, made to order. Ours are built at 240 Ellwood Drive West in Bolton: a sheet of 26-gauge black corrugated steel fastened flat in a jig inside a pre-stained 2×4 wood frame, so the panel arrives square and hangs between pressure-treated 4×4 posts at 96 in. on centre, the same layout as every cedar and treated panel we build. Two panels, one price. The solid face is a metal privacy fence with no sight lines; the lattice topcrowns the steel with a diagonal lattice, a version the BC sellers do not offer. The steel is Canadian-made and carries its manufacturer’s limited 40-year warranty on the steel and its finish. The frame is stained wood, not cedar, and we say so; it wants a coat on a many-years cycle, and the steel wants a hose.

Asked before buying wood and steel.

Does a corrugated metal fence rust, and how long does it last?

Not in fence duty while the finish is whole. The steel in our panels is 26-gauge Canadian-made sheet with a factory finish, and the manufacturer backs the steel and that finish with a limited 40-year warranty; the documentation is available on request. Rust starts where bare steel meets water, which on a fence means a field cut or a scratch through the paint, so leave the sheet uncut and touch up any scratch that reaches metal. The frame is stained wood and is the part that ages first, on a many-years re-staining cycle. The frame and our workmanship are covered separately from the steel, and we say so because most metal-fence listings put one big number on the page and leave the rest to the fine print.

Is a corrugated metal fence loud in the wind or the rain?

Ours is quiet, because the sheet is fastened inside a wood frame on all four sides in a jig, and a sheet that cannot move cannot drum. The rattle people describe comes from loose or unframed sheets screwed straight to posts with too few fasteners, where a gust works the metal against the screws. A framed panel hung between well-set posts does not do that. Heavy rain is audible up close, the way it is on any hard surface, and not from inside the house.

Does a black metal fence get hot in the sun?

The face does, in full afternoon sun, the way a black car does. A thin sheet holds very little heat, so it cools within minutes of shade or a breeze, and it does not radiate enough to bother a garden bed in front of it. It is not a surface to lean on at 3 p.m. in July, which is rarely a problem on a fence line. If small children or a dog spend the day against the fence, put the run on the north or east side where you can, or plant in front of it. The pre-stained wood frame stays cool to the touch.

Can I paint the steel or stain the frame?

The frame, yes: it is pre-stained wood, and a fresh coat of exterior stain on a many-years cycle is the only maintenance the panel asks for. The steel, best not. The factory finish is what the 40-year warranty covers, and paint over it will chalk and peel long before the finish underneath would have. If you want a colour other than black, the honest answer is that we build black only, and the BC online metal-panel sellers offer a colour range.

What posts do corrugated metal fence panels need?

The same posts as any 6 ft panel we build: pressure-treated 4×4 posts set at 96 in. on centre, with 6×6 posts at gates and corners. For a 6 ft fence in southern Ontario use a 10 ft post ($18.79 each at the yard), set about 48 in. deep to clear frost with 6 ft standing above grade. The solid steel face catches more wind than a shadowbox, so the posts and their footings matter more on an exposed run: gravel at the bottom of the hole, concrete to grade, and a day to cure before you hang the panel. Can wood and steel panels mix with cedar or pressure-treated panels on one run?

Yes. Every NorthStar panel hangs between posts at 96 in. on centre, so a metal run shares its posts with cedar or pressure-treated panels without changing the layout. Standing heights differ by a few inches (the steel solid face is a true 66.5 in., the lattice top 68 in., and the wood panels run 67.5 to 73.5 in.), so plan the tops where two styles meet. How much does a corrugated metal fence cost per foot in Ontario?

$21.25 a foot for the panels alone: $169.99 per 6 ft × 8 ft panel, divided by eight. Add a 10 ft 4×4 post per bay, about $2.35 a foot, and the materials for a 6 ft corrugated metal fence come to roughly $24 a foot before concrete, fasteners and HST, at our published prices. Labour is the same as hanging any panel, because the posts are the work. Do you deliver metal fence panels across Ontario?

Within about 100 km of Bolton, yes: Toronto, Peel, York, Halton, Durham, Hamilton and most of the GTA, for $200 per 40 panels plus HST, and we call to book the window. Pickup at the yard at 240 Ellwood Drive West, Bolton, Ontario L7E 4W6 is free, and in-stock panels are ready the next business day. Beyond the ring (Ottawa, London, Kingston) we do not run a truck today; a contractor or a rented trailer collects from Bolton, and 96 in. panels lie flat in a full-size pickup. Why the wood frame

All-steel fence systems read cold and industrial, and a damaged section means ordering parts from the factory. The hybrid build sets matte-black corrugated metal inside a warm pre-stained frame. It looks sharper, repairs from any lumber yard and costs less per panel than a steel-framed kit. Solid face for full privacy, or crowned with a diagonal lattice top.
