What you’re buying.
The fence rail, sometimes called a stringer: the horizontal 2×4 that runs post to post and carries the boards. A 6 ft fence section between posts at 96 in. on centre takes two rails at least, top and bottom, and three to keep a 6 ft 1×6 board flat through its first summer, so an 8 ft length fits a section with nothing to cut. A nominal 2×4 measures 1½ in. by 3½ in.
It is the same premium brown-treated 2×4 we frame our own panels with. Kiln-dried, so it goes up straight and stays straight instead of twisting a rail off the line as it dries down, with the brown colour built into the treatment and rated for above-ground use. The same stick frames a deck, a gate or a pergola.
