What you’re buying.
The 8 ft 4×4 fence post, a true 3½ in. square. Set 48 in. deep to clear frost in southern Ontario, it stands 4 ft above grade, which makes it the post for a 4 ft fence; a 6 ft fence wants the 10 ft post, 48 in. down and 6 ft up. Ground-contact treated, the heavier treatment a fence board does not need, because the post is the one piece that lives in the soil.
One post per 8 ft section, plus one to close the run, at 96 in. on centre; a 6×6 at gates and corners, where the leverage is highest. Gravel at the bottom of the hole, concrete to grade, and a day to cure before the rails or panels go on.
