What you’re buying.
This is the fence board: the picket that faces the yard, in the size an Ontario fence is built from. A nominal 1×6, a true ¾ in. by 5½ in., 6 ft long for a 6 ft fence. It is a premium board, not a commodity one. Kiln-dried, so most of the water is already out of the wood: it comes off the pile lighter and straighter, and it holds its shape through its first summer instead of cupping, twisting and opening gaps the way a wet green board does.
The brown colour is built into the treatment, not brushed on at the yard, so the run goes up finished and even with no staining weekend attached. Rated for above-ground use, which is exactly what a picket is; the posts are the part in the ground and carry the heavier ground-contact treatment. Graded premium, with fewer knots and splits, so more of the bundle goes on the fence and less on the offcut pile.
How many: a solid privacy section between posts at 96 in. on centre takes 16 to 17 boards with 3/16 in. gaps, on two or three 2×4 rails. A shadowbox, with the boards alternating on both sides of the rails, takes about 12 a side. It is the same board we pick through to build our own privacy and shadowbox panels, sold by the piece for pickup at our Bolton yard and priced below the big box’s premium board. Fencing a whole run? Our pre-built panels save the board-by-board labour; call 647-569-2163 for a bulk board quote.
