Fence rules in Caledon.
A backyard fence in Caledon can be up to 2.0 m (6 ft 6 in). A pool needs an enclosure at least 1.2 m high, approved by the town before the water goes in.
How tall a fence can be in Caledon.
The rules below come from Fence By-law 2017-68, as amended by 2026-066, and cover Bolton, Caledon East, Palgrave, Inglewood, Alton and the rural town.
| Where the fence is | Height limit |
|---|---|
| Back yard | 2.0 m (6 ft 6 in) |
| Side yard between houses | 2.0 m (6 ft 6 in) |
| Side yard along a street (corner lot) | 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) |
| Front yard | 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) |
| Front yard of a lot in a registered subdivision | 1.0 m (3 ft 3 in) |
| Next to a commercial, industrial or institutional lot | 3.0 m (9 ft 10 in) |
How it’s measured. From the finished ground at the base of the fence to its highest point directly above. On a retaining wall, from the top of the wall.
Posts and caps. No allowance for posts or caps: the highest point counts.
Corners and driveways.
Inside a corner sight triangle (9 m along each street from the corner, 15 m on a regional road), the top of the fence can be no more than 1.0 m above the street.
Pool enclosures in Caledon.
The pool enclosure permit comes before any part of the pool or the enclosure is built: $458, plus a $2,000 security for an in-ground pool ($500 above ground). The pool stays empty until the enclosure is inspected.
- At least 1.2 m high at every point, at least 1.2 m from the water, and not in the front yard.
- Nothing climbable on the outside or within 1.2 m of it, including a neighbour’s fence, a tree or an air conditioner.
- Wood: posts at least 100 × 100 mm, 1.2 m into the ground and no more than 2.4 m apart; rails at least 2 × 4; boards spaced 12.7 mm to 89 mm apart. A solid panel with no gaps counts as other construction, which the Chief Building Official has to approve with the permit.
- Gates close and latch by themselves, with the latch on the inside at or near the top. Keep them closed and locked.
What needs a permit, and how to ask for more.
Permits. No permit for an ordinary fence. A pool needs a pool enclosure permit before any part of it is built.
Exemptions. Ask the Town for a variance: $565, with a survey and a site plan. Your neighbours next door get a chance to comment, and the decision is final.
- The Line Fences Act doesn’t apply in Caledon, and the Town doesn’t settle property line disputes. Have a surveyor confirm the line before you build.
- Replace half or more of an old fence and the whole fence has to meet today’s by-law.
Check with the town before you build.

This page covers heights, corners and driveways, pools and permits; the full by-law, linked below, covers everything else. We read each figure here from the town’s own documents and last checked them on September 26, 2026. By-laws change, and zoning, a subdivision agreement or a heritage designation can set a lower limit on your street. The town’s by-law office has the final word, so check with them before you build.
