Fence rules in Mississauga.
A backyard fence in Mississauga can be up to 2.0 m (6 ft 6 in). A pool needs an enclosure at least 1.22 m high, approved by the city before the water goes in.
How tall a fence can be in Mississauga.
The rules below come from Fence By-law 0397-1978, as amended to 0020-2026, and cover Streetsville, Meadowvale, Erin Mills, Lorne Park, Port Credit and the rest of the city.
| Where the fence is | Height limit |
|---|---|
| Any yard on a home or business lot | 2.0 m (6 ft 6 in) |
| Front yard, within 4.5 m of the street, solid fence | 1.0 m (3 ft 3 in) |
| Front yard, within 4.5 m of the street, open fence | 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) |
| Corner sight triangle, 6 m along each street | 1.0 m, unless open and see-through |
How it’s measured. From “effective ground level”: the average level of the ground within 1.25 m of the spot being measured.
Posts and caps. The limit is the height the fence reaches, so the posts count.
Corners and driveways.
At a corner, nothing over 1.0 m inside the sight triangle (6 m along each street from the corner) unless it is open and doesn’t block the view. Where your back yard meets a neighbour’s front yard, the fence has to be open within 4.5 m of their driveway. Open means at least a third of the face is open space.
Pool enclosures in Mississauga.
Book a Swimming Pool Enclosure Inspection Request before the pool goes in ($402.53 including HST), and call 311 for the final enclosure inspection before you fill it.
- At least 1.22 m (4 ft) above effective ground level for a pool at a house, semi or small building of up to five units.
- Gates hang on metal hinges, close by themselves, and latch at the top on the inside.
What needs a permit, and how to ask for more.
Permits. The fence by-law has no permit for an ordinary fence. A pool needs an enclosure inspection booked before it goes in.
Exemptions. Apply to the City for a fence exemption with a survey, a site plan, the fence specifications, proof you told your neighbours and photos. The fee is $361.20 including HST.
- A privacy screen (a screen within the yard, not the line fence) can reach 3 m in a back or side yard if it stays 4.5 m from the street and 1.25 m from the side and back lines, with no more than 12 m in total.
- The City doesn’t settle disputes over a fence on the property line; that is between neighbours.
Check with the city before you build.

This page covers heights, corners and driveways, pools and permits; the full by-law, linked below, covers everything else. We read each figure here from the city’s own documents and last checked them on September 26, 2026. By-laws change, and zoning, a subdivision agreement or a heritage designation can set a lower limit on your street. The city’s by-law office has the final word, so check with them before you build.
