Fence rules in Orangeville.
A backyard fence in Orangeville can be up to 2.1 m (6 ft 10 in). A pool needs an enclosure at least 1.524 m high, approved by the town before the water goes in.
How tall a fence can be in Orangeville.
The rules below come from Zoning By-law 22-90 and Pool Enclosure By-law 2026-030, and cover Montgomery Village, Purple Hill and downtown.
| Where the fence is | Height limit |
|---|---|
| Back and side yards | 2.1 m (6 ft 10 in) |
| Back and side yards, with open lattice or trellis above 2.1 m | 2.7 m (8 ft 10 in) |
| Front yard | 0.9 m (2 ft 11 in) |
| Noise fence, with an acoustical engineer’s study | 3.0 m (9 ft 10 in) |
How it’s measured. The zoning rule caps the height of the fence itself.
Posts and caps. The zoning rule makes no allowance for posts or caps, so keep the whole fence, posts included, under the limit.
Corners and driveways.
No fence along the street line inside a sight triangle, 6 m along each street from the corner.
Pool enclosures in Orangeville.
The pool enclosure permit comes before any digging or setup: $184.76 above ground, $316.73 in-ground plus a $500 damage deposit. The fence is inspected, then the pool gets a final inspection before it is filled.
- At least 1.524 m (5 ft) high, measured from the highest ground within 1.524 m outside the enclosure, or from anything climbable next to it.
- No gap a 102 mm ball could pass through (lattice and chain link have their own rules), and no rails or diagonal braces on the outside within that height.
- Nothing within 4 ft outside the enclosure that a child could climb.
- Board fences: boards at least 19 mm thick, rails at least 2 × 4, posts at least 4 × 4 and no more than 2.4 m apart.
- Gates have lockable self-closing hinges and self-latching hardware. Keep them latched.
What needs a permit, and how to ask for more.
Permits. An ordinary fence needs no permit. Every pool that holds more than 600 mm of water, inflatables included, needs a pool enclosure permit.
Exemptions. Fence heights are zoning, so relief from them is a minor variance at the Committee of Adjustment.
- Orangeville’s Pool Enclosure By-law 2026-030, passed May 11, 2026, replaced the 1993 pool by-law.

This page covers heights, corners and driveways, pools and permits; the full by-law, linked below, covers everything else. We read each figure here from the town’s own documents and last checked them on September 26, 2026. By-laws change, and zoning, a subdivision agreement or a heritage designation can set a lower limit on your street. The town’s by-law office has the final word, so check with them before you build.
